Phantom of the Opera
The final production of the Phantom of the Opera in Houston was seen by us. In the evening's performance, there were a number of understudies and/or substitutes, including the roles of Carlotta and Laci Kaye Booth, as well as the conductor of the pit orchestra.
Performing well were the roles of Carlotta and Laci Kaye Booth. I would not have known that these were understudies had I not been informed. Both performers were very well prepared and extremely comfortable performing. The conductor did an adequate job. There were times when I sensed that the stage performers and the orchestra were not quite together. These issues were very quickly reconciled, yet I felt like the conductor was likely the reason for this. Being a musician myself, I can sympathize with everyone involved when a guest is called in to conduct for a production of this size.
Beautiful sets complemented the story line nicely for the performance. The live performance far surpassed the movie production.
The use of prerecorded music as a supplement in the productions at the Hobby Center continues to disturb me. I recognize its necessity, though. Hopefully, a solution will be discovered to eliminate this need.
